***An Urban Fantasy series for fans of JIM BUTCHER, RICHARD KADREY, and KEVIN HEARNE***

My name is King Henry Price.

Yes, really.

Family is gonna be the death of me. That or my foul mouth. Or my pugnacious personality. Or . . . well, okay, so I'm the kind of guy might get his mortal coil snuffed out from any number of directions. But family, family is the one I can't change, one that's stuck with me.

The one I left behind. Or tried to at least, when I went to train at the Institution of Elements for seven years, learning to be an Artificer. Big deal in the magical world, being an Artificer, especially running the only free and self-owned Artificer shop in the Western Hemisphere.

Left family behind, yes I did. Joined a whole new world. Joined it more than ever a few months back when I got kidnapped by a vampire, forced to work for her in solving some theft of a big bad magic item. Survived that somehow, even got a magic wand out of it, look at me! All big and tough, writing my name large on the wall of life!

But family? Might not survive them. Might not survive finding one of my long lost sisters, especially seeing she's hanging with some Coyote Nation goons. Machine guns, even magic don't like machine guns.

Jordan Josephine Price . . . found you at last.

The Foul Mouth and the Cat Killing Coyotes The King Henry Tapes Book 2 eBook Richard Raley

I read the first and second of these books and I'm working on the third now. I'm not usually a fan of the trashmouth--usually hate it,truth to tell--but these books are hilarious! Even through the totally awful language, almost every page gave me the insane giggles. King Henry is every parent's nightmare, every teacher's torture, every schoolgirl's squealy skincrawl, and I LOVE him! I appreciate his sense of the absurd and his joy in a good fight. I'd hate him in real life, of course, because in real life I'd only ever see the surface brat--but I love hearing about his life in his own belligerent, disgusting, well-placed words. This book is worth setting aside my usual prejudices in order to discover a hidden genius.

The Foul Mouth and the Cat Killing Coyotes The King Henry Tapes Book 2 eBook Richard Raley Reviews

I felt let down by this book, compared to the previous one (Fanged Lady). As with the first book the narrative jumps back and forth between adult and student King Henry. I found the adult storyline to be generally lacking. I didn't really buy into King Henry's motivation, the overall stakes were lower, and T-Bone made for a much less interesting sidekick than Anne B (possibly due to lack of sexual tension, more likely because he's just underdeveloped). The student storyline was somewhat better, though the very best bits were (in retrospect) merely laying groundwork for the craziness of the third book. What bugged me the most, though [mild spoiler warning] was that despite the primary antagonists of the book being the Coyote Nation, there were no actual coyotes. Not a single mancer vs were-coyote fight. And the whole thing ended fairly anti-climacticly.

All that being said, it's worth reading just to get to the third book.
This book is just as good as the first one. I love his friend T-Bone. It's interested how two completely different people can remain friends. T-Bone also brings out the softer side in King Henry and shows that there is a lot of depth to our beloved K.H. My favorite scene between the two is when they're pooling outside the wall and King Henry talks about Annie B. So awesome.

This book has a jarring ending, especially compared to the first and third foul mouth books, but I still like it a lot. I think it sets up a lot of anticipation for furthering the series, much more so than the other books. I can't wait to see what is going to happen next, and what vulgarities are going to come out of King Henry's mouth.

The flashbacks to the Asylum are great too. I love how we learn a little more about King Henry's time there as each story progresses. This series is quickly becoming my favorite series.
King Henry price, both as a student and as an adult, is rude and obscene and funny and even though very much a fictional character, also very fully developed and a real personality. Because of the rudeness, I would never recommend this to anyone who is genuinely offended by or even uncomfortable with foul language. I'm not, being much more offended by hate language and things meant to hurt someone's feelings than I am by the F bomb, and I found this book and the one before it, to be entertaining and a lot of fun.

I enjoy the story being told in two time frames, both in the school days at the magical, but not Hogwarts, asylum, and in the adult world where King Henry must make a living and deal with such things as finding his missing sister married to the Head Were-coyote.

This series was recommended to me when i was lamenting being done with the most recent Dresden Series book, and there is a sense of familiarity in the use of magic to fight off supernatural crime. It is a fun and energetic story, if you like magic and mystery and a certain sense of honest cynicism.
I really like this series and the way it's set up. Every other chapter is one story-line, so you end up with two stories in the end one is when King Henry is at school, the other after he graduated. The earlier story also informs the events in the future story. The concept keeps you on your toes as to what's happening when and I did find myself tripping up on the stories a few times.

In this book King Henry goes up against were-coyotes, which are basically werewolves just using coyotes. Apparently there are many different species of were as well. He also finds his younger sister Jojo who is mixed up with the coyotes. Unfortunately, at the end nothing is really accomplished and it seems the were-coyotes will come back in another book, hopefully to reach a conclusion to this story.
If you like urban fantasy or are the least bit into underdog protagonists with authority problems and watching them come to grips with their inner demons and the journey they take into respectable citizenry, then this is for you.

I really enjoy the unique perspective the story is told from. You are reading a transcript of tapes recorded, reluctantly, by the protagonist, King Henry Price. He made two sets, one as a fresh graduate from the seven year Hogwarts equivalent, in these he is much more rough around the edges as he tells of his childhood and school days. The second set is made after he has a daughter in the same school. He has somehow made it as a respectable gentleman in his world. In these he tells of how he discovered what is really going on in the world, the hard way, face first, into many a wall. Not to mention he has some serious hinting at having both saved and imperiled the world at least once.

Knowing his daughter has listened to these tapes, how it impacted her, and guessing at how they might impact the other kids listening ads a lot of depth to the whole thing.

The author does a great job of juggling two stories a chapter at a time, one from school and one from his adult adventures. An off used mechanic, but done very well here. I've been riveted for two books straight.

It feels lighter and maybe even happier than the King Killer Chronicles or the Dresden Files, and less is said about the mechanics of the magic system then in either, but it doesn't lack for grim or grit. I'm only two books in though.. So who knows how noir it could turn.

Well worth the time to read it. It's going on my shelf for a re-read next year for sure.
